Library of Virginia Volunteer Opportunity

to Transcribe Vestry Records of St. John's Church, Henrico Parish

Vestry records are essential sources for the history of St. John's Church. The volumes from Henrico Parish reach back to 1730 and run through the present. Organized by monthly or yearly meetings, these records trace developments in church leadership, property, programs, members, and events to reveal the life of the congregation and the city. Recently the Library of Virginia scanned and digitized a portion of these early vestry records dating from 1730 up through 1900.

In addition to posting a digital copy of the volumes, the Library of Virginia has offered to add these volumes to their volunteer transcription program to make the handwritten records more easily readable and electronically searchable. The first volume, covering 1730 to 1773, was transcribed and published in 1874 and again in 1904, but the remaining three volumes have never been transcribed or published.
